The Best Dive Sites in the Red Sea: The Ultimate Guide

Egypt’s Red Sea is one of the world’s great diving destinations — a 2,000-kilometre coastline of coral walls, historic wrecks, shark reefs and dolphin lagoons. Northern Red Sea (Sharm El Sheikh)

Ras Mohammed National Park is the crown jewel of the north, where Shark and Yolanda Reef combine a fish-filled wall with a scattered wreck. Nearby, the Straits of Tiran offer four world-class reefs — Jackson, Woodhouse, Thomas and Gordon — famous for drift diving and healthy coral. And no list is complete without the SS Thistlegorm, the legendary WWII wreck packed with motorcycles, trucks and locomotives.

Southern Red Sea (Marsa Alam)

The south is quieter, wilder and richer in marine life. Elphinstone Reef is the region’s icon, famous for oceanic whitetip sharks along its dramatic plateaus. Abu Dabbab is the place to snorkel and dive with green turtles and the elusive dugong, while Shaab Samadai (Dolphin House) shelters a resident pod of spinner dolphins.

Offshore reefs (liveaboard only)

The Red Sea’s most thrilling diving is far from shore. The Brothers Islands pair sheer walls and two historic wrecks with grey reef and thresher sharks. Daedalus Reef is the summer hammerhead hotspot, and both are reached only by liveaboard on the classic Brothers–Daedalus–Elphinstone route.

The Deep South (Wadi Lahami & Fury Shoals)

Egypt’s far south holds its most pristine reefs. St John’s Reef is a maze of caves, coral gardens and offshore pinnacles, while Sataya (Dolphin Reef) is one of the best places on earth to snorkel with wild spinner dolphins. Both are explored from the Wadi Lahami eco-village or by liveaboard.
