Diving Elphinstone Reef: Sharks, Walls & How to Dive It

Few Red Sea sites have the reputation of Elphinstone. This long, cigar-shaped reef off Marsa Alam drops into deep blue on both sides and, in the right season, delivers some of Egypt’s best big-animal diving. Here is what makes it special, what you will see, how to dive it safely, and when to go.

What makes Elphinstone special

Two shallow plateaus at the north and south ends give way to sheer walls smothered in vibrant soft coral. Currents sweep the reef, drawing in life and making for exhilarating drift dives along the drop-offs. The southern plateau, with its famous arch in deeper water, is the stuff of dive legend.

Marine life at Elphinstone

Elphinstone is best known for sharks: oceanic whitetips patrol here in summer and autumn, often escorted by pilot fish, with grey reef sharks and the occasional hammerhead. Add turtles, tuna, barracuda, big Napoleon wrasse and dense schools of reef fish, and every dive holds the promise of an encounter.

The dive — and who it is for

Because of the current and depth, Elphinstone is best suited to experienced divers, ideally Advanced-certified with good buoyancy and drift experience. Your guide plans the dive along the walls and plateaus to match the day’s conditions, and a surface marker buoy is essential for the drift.

How to dive Elphinstone

You can reach it by speedboat as a day dive — for example a single speedboat dive from Marsa Nakari — or as part of a liveaboard safari, which often allows several dives on the reef.

When to go

Summer and autumn are prime for shark encounters and warm, calm water; conditions can be rougher and cooler in winter.

Safety & tips

Watch your depth and air on the walls, carry an SMB, stay with your guide and group in the current, and keep a respectful distance from any sharks — never chase or corner them. Nitrox is a smart choice for the deeper profiles.

Frequently asked questions

Is Elphinstone safe to dive?

Yes, with the right experience and a good guide. It is an advanced site because of current and depth, so it is not ideal for brand-new divers.

What sharks will I see at Elphinstone?

Most famously oceanic whitetips in summer and autumn, plus grey reef sharks and occasional hammerheads.

Can beginners dive Elphinstone?

It is best left until you have some drift and depth experience; newer divers are better starting on Marsa Alam’s house reefs and inner-range sites.

Do I need Nitrox?

Not required, but recommended for the deeper, longer profiles this site invites.
